The City of Fort St. John is backing the Peace River Regional District’s new framework for managing regional parks.
A letter from the city was presented to the PRRD board during its Sept. 10 meeting after city council reviewed Regional Parks Conversion and Service Establishment Bylaw No. 2601, 2026.
The bylaw establishes an updated framework for the regional parks service, allowing the regional district to continue acquiring, developing, operating and maintaining regional parks.
The PRRD board adopted the bylaw at its Aug. 13 meeting.
Milo MacDonald, chief administrative officer for the City of Fort St. John, said council supported the principle of establishing a long-term model for regional parks.
“On that basis, [the] council provided direction to signal their support of this bylaw through a formal letter,” MacDonald said.
The city is aware the PRRD has already received the required number of support letters for the bylaw and that it has been adopted.
MacDonald said the city sees parks and recreation infrastructure as something that benefits people throughout the region, regardless of whether those facilities are located within municipal boundaries.
“We trust that this letter communicates an understanding that recreation and park infrastructure, within and outside of our municipal boundaries, is a benefit to all regional residents and is a priority we share with the Peace River Regional District,” he said.
The letter formally signals Fort St. John’s support for the regional parks service and the PRRD’s efforts to establish a sustainable framework for regional park development and management.
