Dawson Creek hospital emergency department is closed until 10 tonight

Northern Health announced the emergency department in the Dawson Creek and District Hospital will be closed today (Monday) from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. because of staffing challenges.

Residents will still be able to receive emergency medical attention – patients with urgent issues will be transported by emergency services to the nearest hospital for treatment.

“Any time services are interrupted, our partners in patient transfer and local health services are notified and signage will be placed at the hospital informing patients to call 9-1-1,” said Northern Health’s Facebook announcement of the closure.

The staffing shortages causing the closures are a known issue in the province.

Earlier this year, in March, the Ministry of Health released a statement regarding the increase in American nurses crossing the border and how credential programs were streamlined so the nurses can fill the gaps in the most needed sectors.

The province specifically named emergency departments and rural communities as some of the priority placements for new hires.

Northern Health said patients who are unsure if their symptoms are considered urgent should contact HealthLink B.C. to seek guidance on whether they should visit an out-of-town emergency room.

Those with non-urgent needs are asked to make an appointment with their primary care provider, and anyone without a family doctor is asked to seek care on HealthLink or via Northern Health’s virtual clinic.

For minor issues, such as sprains, cold sores, and upset stomach, residents are advised to visit their local pharmacist – who can help treat 21 different ailments and provide refills on contraceptives.
