The city of Fort St John presented the Freedom of the City award to former mayor Steve Thorlakson, who was a strong proponent of the economic prosperity of northeastern B.C.Â
Thorlakson was recognized for his service to the city last night (Tuesday) at City Hall. Â
He is one of only seven people that have received this award – which is described as Fort St John’s highest honour, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the community. Â
The former mayor was elected in 1990 and remained in the position until 2005.Â
“During his tenure, he led the city through a critical financial turning point, helping transform Fort St John into the vibrant, livable community it is today,” the city wrote. Â
He is credited for championing the Fair Share Agreement, which evolved into today’s Peace River Agreement – the provincially-funded program has provided over $375 million to the city since the original contract was signed in 1994, under Thorlakson’s council.Â
“This landmark agreement between the province and local governments in our region provided sustainable, predictable funding to enhance infrastructure, recreation, and essential services in Fort St John,” wrote city staff.Â
On the city’s Facebook post recognizing the event, there are dozens of comments congratulating Thorlakson – several also agreed with council’s decision to honour him, saying the award was, “well-deserved.”Â
