The Fort St John Senior’s Hall closed the gap in funding their new roof with a $40,250 grant provided by a foundation committed to supporting local organizations who foster community.
The grant was provided to the 55+ community centre by the North Peace Community Foundation. The seniors’ hall has urgently needed a new roof since it began leaking.
The hall hosts social events for mature residents of the city, including weekly bingo nights, 50/50 raffles, and potlucks.
This grant will provide the centre with a “nearly a brand-new roof,” according to the foundation, and was funded through donations collected from local organizations and money from provincial resources.
“(The grant) was made possible through both the North Peace Savings and Credit Union Legacy Fund and the B.C. Prosperity Fund, a powerful example of local and provincial resources coming together for community impact,” the foundation said.
The foundation’s chair said positively impacting the community is of the utmost important to them.
“The senior’s hall is more than a building; it’s a hub of connection for seniors,” said Tracey Wolsey, the chair of the North Peace Community Foundation.
Providing a new roof to keep seniors safe, as well as warm and dry in the winter, is a part of the foundation’s larger goal to support local infrastructure and better residents’ quality of life.
