Contract awarded to replace the roof at the North Peace Leisure Pool

Fort St John’s North Peace Leisure Pool will undergo construction after Peace River’s regional board voted to replace its roof.

The Peace River District Regional board unanimously awarded the roofing contract to a Dawson Creek-based company during their meeting on July 17. Staff said an issue with the facility’s roof was spotted during an inspection last year.

Henderson Roofing was awarded the contract, which is estimated to cost $833,250 before taxes – the price is higher than council initially allocated, driven by rising construction costs.

During previous meetings’ discussions, the council put aside a 10 per cent contingency fund for the project, only to be used if the change is approved. At the July 9 meeting, they raised the budget to $950,000 and lowered the priority level of other needs at the pool – like remodelling the front desk and renovating change rooms.

The pool is owned by the Peace River Regional District, but day-to-day operations are handled by the city.

Fees paid by residents at the pools are collected and utilized by Fort St John – whose city council voted to gradually increase the price of recreation services over the next five years at their most recent meeting.

The regional district did not provide a timeline as to when construction is expected to begin.
