Northeast B.C. is continuing to battle the nationwide measles outbreak with active cases being reported in the region. This comes after Monday’s report said the province was in the clear.
The B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported two active cases of measles in Northern Health as of the morning of July 31, the only other active case in the province is in Interior Health.
Northern Health leads the province in measles cases, with 91 confirmed cases – Fraser Health had 22 confirmed cases so far in 2025, this regional health authority had the second most cases.
The three people with measles in B.C. were exposed somewhere in Canada, according to the centre’s data – this follows a larger trend of 90 per cent of cases stemming from local exposure.
Fort St John’s last reported exposure was on the afternoon of July 13, at the city’s emergency department – the centre for disease control cautioned people that “measles is circulating in (the) North Peace area.”
B.C. has the third highest case count of measles in Canada, behind Ontario and Alberta respectively – Ontario had over 2,300 cases and Alberta saw 1,450 cases, according to the federal government’s measles and rubella weekly monitoring report.
The most effective defence against the once-eliminated virus is immunization, according to Northern Health, the provincial centre for disease control, and most public health agencies.
