Several areas in the region set new temperature records yesterday as the sun shone on the Peace.
According to Environment Canada, Chetwynd was the hottest, with a new record temperature of 32 degrees, up from the previous daily record for Aug. 26 being 29.8, which was noted two years ago.
Following closely on the district’s heels, Dawson Creek set a record of 31.1 degrees yesterday and Fort Nelson recorded its highest daily temperature for the late-August day since 1950. The municipality reached 30 degrees yesterday, which was one degree hotter than the record set 75 years ago.
Fort St John was the coolest location by a landslide, with the North Peace Regional Airport reporting a temperature of 29.8 degrees, which is only 0.4 degrees hotter than the city’s previous record that was set in 1933.
Environment Canada has not yet issued a heat warning for the north or south Peace, but much of the southern region of the province is currently subject to warnings and special weather statements cautioning residents in the area of the damage extreme heat can do.
Residents of the four record-setting communities in the Peace can perfect their tans until the end of the work week, all of the communities will see highs of 30 degrees or over until Saturday, when the high drops back into the late-20s.
