Areas of Fort St John will be without power this Sunday

Some residents of Fort St John will be without power all day this Sunday, Sept. 7, as crews perform scheduled maintenance in certain areas.

B.C. Hydro said impacted customers in Fort St John and its surrounding communities received notice, those who have an online account with the utility company should have received an automatic phone call or email. People without MyHydro accounts will receive a postcard in the mail, but real-time updates will only be sent to those with a registered email or phone number.

Rural communities surrounding Fort St John, including Charlie Lake, Wonwon, and Clayhurst will also be without power during the work. Around 3,000 people in the north Peace are expected to be without power from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 7, while crews perform planned work on their equipment.

Before the planned outage begins that morning, people are being asked to unplug major appliances, electric heaters, and sensitive electronics – such as PCs, Wi-Fi routers, and security systems. Gaming consoles are also susceptible to becoming damaged when power is restored.

After power is restored, affected residents are asked to wait one hour before plugging in non-essential electronics. B.C. Hydro said this will give the system a chance to stabilize after being reset.
