The B.C. Wildfire Service said the 19 hectare wildfire that broke out in Bluff Creek, near Chetwynd, is now being held.
This phase of firefighting comes immediately after fires are no longer considered out of control, and means it is likely the flames will stop growing. The service said the phase is initiated “based on fuel and weather conditions and resource availability.”
Firefighters may now completely establish fire control lines, which are barriers that act as edges to control the spread of the blaze. They will also begin extinguishing the fire, as it moves closer to being controlled.
Despite the fire being held, residents of the south Peace are still dealing under an air quality warning from “numerous active fires in the province,” according to Environment Canada and the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Parks.
Air quality warnings are issued as health risks stemming from smoke inhalation become more likely for people who spend a lot of time outdoors. The environmental agencies recommended people close their windows and reschedule outdoor activities.
