Several charges laid after gun brandished during road rage incident

Four people were arrested outside of Fort St John after waving a gun during a fit of road rage. While searching their vehicle, the RCMP found another gun, drugs, and cash.

The police force said officers were sent to Baldonnel, a town 12 kilometres outside of Fort St John, after someone called to inform them of the road rage incident where a man pointed a gun at another driver on Highway 97.

After finding and arresting four adults in Taylor, their vehicle was searched and officers found a carbine rifle and handgun with ammunition, cash, and drugs. Carbine rifles are shorter and more compact than service rifles.

The legal status of a carbine weapon depends on the gun’s exact specifications – automatic carbines are illegal in Canada.

Travis Dion Sharyk, a 35-year-old man, is facing a slew of charges-  his alleged gun crimes include possession for a dangerous purpose, occupying a vehicle knowing there was a restricted firearm in it, and unsafe storage of a firearm. He was also charged for having guns and ammunition in his possession, because it was not allowed per a previous court order of his.

Sharyk’s final charge was failure to comply with a probation order. He will remain in police custody until his next court appearance this coming Tuesday, Sept. 9.

A second person, Jolene Christine Wilders, was charged with occupying a vehicle knowing the restricted rifle was present, unsafe storage of a firearm, and failure to comply with a release order. The 40-year-old is expected to appear in court on Sept. 29 and was released from police custody on bail.

The RCMP said a 32-year-old woman and a 37-year-old woman were also arrested but were released from jail conditionally and have court dates scheduled.
