Fort St John city councillors Trevor Bolin and Sarah MacDougall will represent the public on the city’s newly-formed aquatic facility working group for the North Peace Leisure Pool project.
The working group will host weekly meetings consisting of the two councillors and members of city staff as they expedite work on the aging pool in the city-owned facility. This new pool project has been in the work for several years, with the project originally falling under the authority of the Peace River Regional District’s steering committee, they were able to collect public feedback, but did not take any major steps towards the pool replacement.
During council’s initial discussions, everyone was in agreement that Mayor Lilia Hansen should be included in the committee, but her other obligations with the regional district meant she would not be able to join.
Instead, the former chair of the regional district’s North Peace Leisure Facility replacement steering committee, councillor Bolin and councillor MacDougall, who works with local sports groups and non-profits, won the unanimous support of their fellow councillors to join the group.
While sitting on the working group, their primary roles will be to act as liaisons to the public by ensuring the community’s opinions are heard, considered, and communicated at the table with the members of staff who will determine the next steps.
Decisions made by the working group will not be binding. They will be presented to all of the members of city council, including the mayor during their scheduled meetings.
