Over $10k donated to Fort St John Legion by local women’s group

100 Women Who Care collected $10,100 in donations to support a local charity’s operations and assistance programs at their event in Fort St John.

The group gathered at the Lido Theatre on Wednesday, Sept 23. Donations collected at this event went to the local legion branch, who support veterans and community members in need. It also hosts regular Friday karaoke nights and other events for residents, regardless of their military experience.

“We cannot express how grateful the (Fort St John) Legion is to receive the donation presented tonight by the 100 Women Who Care Community Organization! Our hearts are so full,” said the Fort St John Royal Canadian Legion, who posted on Facebook after last night’s meeting. They pledged to “continue to give back.”

During their presentation to the women, they said they would use the funds to cover operating costs.

“Branch 102 requested support to cover essential operating costs such as bills and building maintenance, allowing them to continue offering services to the community and assisting citizens in need,” said the organizers of the event.

In total, the volunteer-run women who care group said it “has hosted 11 events so far, raising $188,230 for non-profits” since the city’s chapter opened in 2017.

Attendees in the Lido heard also from the Fort St John Literacy Society and the local seniors’ care foundation before casting votes, and ultimately, supporting the legion. Recipients of the funds are nominated by community members.

None of the women who care are paid for their efforts, they volunteer their time, energy, and skills to organize the event. All the money raised goes to whichever charity the members elect.

Nominations are open for their next event, when they return to the Lido Theatre in March. Residents can submit any charitable organizations who “are based in the community.”

The group said this assures the funds stay local and removes the barrier of formally registering as a charity.
