Water you doing on Monday? The North Peace Leisure Pool is reopening

Swimmers can dive into the six-lap pool in Fort St John on Monday after its annual refresh finishes up this weekend.

Following its almost month-long closure, the city-run North Peace Leisure Pool will reopen for public use bright and early on Monday, Oct 6. The city’s recreation department said the pool will be ready for guests at six that morning.

“Aquatic facilities require annual maintenance to extend the facility’s life and minimize unexpected closures,” the city of Fort St John said.

Within the first week of its closure, the pool was drained, and basin cleaning began. It is shut down for a few weeks starting in the beginning of September for an annual refresh and major repairs.

This year, the facility’s sauna benches were fixed and the changing rooms were regrouted. Prep work was also done in the steam room, where lines “have been replaced in preparation for the new steam generator,” the city’s recreation department said in an update.

Some larger projects cannot be safely completed when the pool is filled with water, the city explained. Deep cleaning parts of the facility, like the pool’s shell, also require it to be emptied.

The hot tub, which has been out of commission for years, was not restored during the shut down. The city determined two years ago that the project is not feasible.

Drawings and other materials were not available for repairs to be planned, and upon further inspection, the city discovered deteriorated piping materials from when the pool was constructed.
