Canada Post’s rotating strike in Dawson Creek is over for now and mail service will resume in the city, though delays are expected.
As mail service returns to the south Peace, Fort St John’s remains paused. It is the only city in B.C. still striking.
Residents of Dawson Creek can expect their mail to begin to trickle in soon as deliveries restart “as quickly as possible once operations resume,” Canada Post said. A nationwide postal strike began in late September, and on Saturday, October 11, rotating strikes commenced, where services would only be halted in specific cities.
Packages are also being accepted at Canada Post offices in Dawson Creek, though delays are expected in parcel processing and deliveries.
“When our operations resume we will need to begin processing the mail and parcels trapped in our network. As we continue to operate with an unstable network, it will take time to clear the trapped volume and manage operational resources,” said the Crown corporation in their initial announcement of the lessened strike measures.
Mail destined for residents of Fort St John will continue being held as the city remains on strike. It is the only city from the initial strike list released last Saturday to remain on strike – the walkouts in Timmins, Ont., St. Anthony, N.L, and Dawson Creek were all rescinded.
Now, striking postal workers in the city are joined by their colleagues in Pictou County, N.S. and Dauphin-Swan River, Man. Meanwhile, negotiations will continue between the Canadian Postal Worker Union and the federal government.
