Dawson Creek introduces new MultiPass for drop-in recreation activities

Residents will now have the option to pay for drop-in activities ahead of time with a new pass being offered by the city.

This new MultiPass will be accepted at all of the city-operated recreation facilities in Dawson Creek – the Ken Borek Aquatic Centre, Memorial Arena, and Kin Arena. It can be purchased and loaded for use at these locations.

“This change means no more juggling multiple passes, guessing fees, or limiting your activity choices. It’s all under one pricing structure, with one pass that goes wherever you want to play,” the city of Dawson Creek explained in their announcement. Discounts are still available for youth, students, and seniors. Adult admission for drop-in activities is set at $8.75.

At the Ken Borek Aquatic Centre, residents can swim or use the indoor climbing wall with the pass. Public skating and pick-up hockey at Memorial Arena, as well as various activities, including volleyball and basketball on the new sports flooring at Kin Arena, are also included.

In addition to the newly announced MultiPass, Dawson Creek city council is considering other changes that will impact its recreation facilities and parks.

One proposed overhaul is the city’s ice allocation policy, which will be revised and modernized to cover more than just the ice. City staff told council the newer version will standardize and generalize the scope of its existing guidelines so it can be applied to baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and other facilities.

Other changes include redefining who can use the ice and which groups are given priority, with city needs — such as events and general maintenance — placed first.

Naming rights for plaques, park dedications, and other structures are also being revised. Staff said the city should create a formal framework for naming these objects to “(generate) supplementary revenue that supports the ongoing funding and sustainability of city facilities, parks and infrastructure.”

Some facilities will be exempt from these dedications – specifics will be identified by council if the proposal is approved. An existing policy will also adjusted to make reference to the naming rights bylaw, if it is accepted.

The ice allocation policy and naming policy will both be considered by city council on Nov. 18. Dawson Creek invited residents to provide feedback ahead of this meeting.
