Spike in vandalism in parks prompts request from city of Fort St John

In the past week, multiple amenities in Fort St John’s Kin Park were set on fire. Now, the city is asking residents for assistance in spotting the vandals.

“This little city has some big problems with behaviour that needs everyone’s attention,” the city of Fort St John said, referencing the recent damage done to Kin Park. Over the weekend, the city said a garbage can and baseball dugout were set on fire in the park. Last Wednesday, Oct. 15, its bathroom was also lit.

Last week’s incident rendered the park’s restroom and pavilion heaters unavailable. City staff said they expect repairs to be finished in “about a week.” Mathews Park’s bathroom had graffiti drawn on it last week, the city said.

Residents visiting parks, or any city-operated facilities, who see vandalism actively happening are advised by the city to call the RCMP. If possible, they are also being asked to take pictures or a video for the Mounties to reference.

Damage spotted after the vandals left should also be reported – albeit not directly to the police. Instead, the city is asking residents to report the vandalism on its website, or the Waste Wise app. Up to two photos can be submitted on the city’s online form.
