An alert will appear on cellphones and interrupt radio and TV broadcasts this Wednesday, as part of a test of British Columbia’s emergency alert system.
The province said the test alert will be sent at 1:55 p.m. on Nov. 19. It said the emergency message will state it is only a test and no action from the public will be required.
B.C.’s emergency alerting system is tested twice a year. It’s part of a Canada-wide system that’s intended to alert the public about imminent hazards and threats to life and safety. That could include alerts about threats due to tsunami, flood, wildfire and extreme-heat emergencies.
The province noted cellphones may not get emergency alerts if they’re not connected to an LTE cellular network, are on “do not disturb” mode, are not compatible or outside of the alert area.
An online survey is available for B.C. residents to provide feedback after the test.
