Ho-ho-hold on to your plans, some city services will be closed later this week

As Santa readies for takeoff and reviews his list once more, cities in the Peace, as well as the regional district, are set to operate with adjusted hours for the Holidays.

Many will close their doors at least one day this week ahead of Christmas – but others, including the RCMP and other emergency services, will remain available regardless of the date through dispatch or at 9-1-1. The front counter of the Fort St John and Dawson Creek police detachments, however, will be closed on the civic holidays – meaning Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Years Day.

All facilities, including both cities’ halls, the Pomeroy Sport Centre, and the Peace River regional district’s offices will be closed for those days. Albeit landfills and transfer stations will be open on Boxing Day, according to the district.

Dawson Creek City Hall and Fort St John City Hall will close early on Christmas Eve – with the southern chambers closing at noon and the latter closing at 2:30.

The regional district offices in both cities will also close at half past two on Wednesday. Their office by the pool in Fort St John will close again the following Monday, Dec. 29, but the Dawson Creek location will remain open.

Parents looking for ways to occupy their winter vacationing children can visit the Kin Sports Flooring in Dawson Creek, which will be closed for the civic holidays plus Christmas Eve.

Memorial Arena and the Kenn Borek Aquatic Centre are open on Wednesday. Skaters have from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the arena, and swimmers can visit the centre between 12-3 that afternoon. The arenas will also operate with adjusted hours on New Year’s Eve.

In Fort St John, city facilities, including the North Peace Leisure Pool and Pomeroy Sport Centre will close at four in the afternoon on Christmas Eve and the day before 2026.

The Kids Arena Fieldhouse and North Peace Arena are only available by appointment in Fort St John, staff said.

Residents of Dawson Creek will see adjusted garbage pickup this week, “due to snow and cold conditions,” the city explained. Pickups scheduled for Christmas, this Thursday, will be rescheduled for the following day. Friday’s pickups will be collected on Dec. 23. Collections on New Years Day next Wednesday will be dealt with on the second.
