Dawson Creek to host 2026 Coy Cup for first time

The 2026 Coy Cup champion will be crowned in Dawson Creek — a first in the tournament’s long history.

The Dawson Creek and District Memorial Arena will serve as home ice for the senior Canucks during the B.C. Hockey championship.

“This has been something we’ve wanted to do for years, and I’ve talked to guys in the last year (saying) that we’re hoping to do this and give back to them,” said Jeff Taylor, the general manager and assistant coach of the Dawson Creek Canucks. “To have something on home ice for the years that we spent travelling around the province – they’re really excited. We’ve got a task of winning our league first and foremost, but after that, we’ll set focus on the Coy Cup”

In support of the tournament, Dawson Creek city council donated $3500 during their first regular council meeting of this year.

“We have a lot of phenomenal people in our community and organizations, and those organizations put a lot of effort into bringing things to our community and our region,” explained Mayor Darcy Dober. “It’s so important to empower community to grow.”

“We are really thankful and grateful that city council is able to help us out with some of the ice costs and donate that money to us. It’s a huge endeavor to support a tournament like this – it’s a lot of money and community support that’s needed,” said Taylor.

Four of the top senior male AA teams will hit the ice in Dawson Creek. The Canucks will face off against the winners of the Island League and the Central Interior Hockey League, as well as the winner of a play-down between the Fort St. John Sr. Flyers and Rossland’s Sr. Warriors.

The Coy Cup will be played as a round robin. All four teams will face each other in the preliminary round. The team finishing first will advance directly to the final, while the fourth-place team will be eliminated. The second- and third-place teams will compete in a semifinal to determine the final spot.

Preliminary games will be held twice daily, with early games starting at 4 p.m. and evening puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

“For an organization like the Canucks (and) how much effort they’ve put into that organization, it’s just nice to reward them with being able to host this year,” said Dober.

The Canucks are three-time Coy Cup champions, and their most recent victory in the tournament was in 2022.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the tournament is encouraged to get in touch with the team.
