No active measles cases have been reported in B.C., including in the northeastern pocket where the majority of cases occurred.
According to the latest update from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, the inactive but confirmed case count rose by one due to a case reported in the eastern section of Fraser Health. The weekly updates contain the total measles cases since the beginning of last year.
Cumulatively, B.C.’s total count has reached 446 cases, with 342 from the northeast. In Northern Health, 364 cases were recorded, and 22 were from elsewhere in the health authority.
Despite the momentary improvement, parts of the Peace region remain subject to exposure notices from B.C.’s health authorities.
“Measles is circulating in the Dawson Creek area (and) measles is circulating in north Peace area,” the B.C. CDC exposure warnings reads. In addition to those broad warnings, a notice was also issued late last month due to an exposure at a local hospital’s emergency room.
This report from the Peace Liard region is the first since the beginning of 2026. Since the centre’s first update on Jan. 8, 14 new northeastern cases of the highly contagious virus have occurred.
To maintain the positive trend of negative measles tests, Northern Health is encouraging residents and children over one year old to be vaccinated. Two doses of any measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) immunization are considered effective, the health authority said.
