City up for two awards after hosting 2025 Para Cup

Dawson Creek is a finalist for two sport tourism awards. The city was shortlisted for its role in hosting the 2025 Para Cup in its Memorial Arena.

Its nominations include the international sport event of the year with a budget of under $2 million and the sport event legacy of the year. The winners will be announced in Mississauga, Ont., on Wednesday.

“Both nominations highlight the impact of the 2025 Para Cup, which brought elite para hockey athletes to Dawson Creek and introduced many residents to adaptive sport at the highest level,” said the city in a statement on the Sport Tourism Canada’s Prestige Awards.

Among those elite athletes in the city was Team Canada para hockey captain Tyler McGregor. McGregor was also one of Canada’s flag-bearers at the Paralympics in Milan last week.

While in Italy, the team will defend its gold medal. In the south Peace, Team Canada lost the tourney, once again, to the United States.

“Working with Hockey Canada to bring the Para Cup to Dawson Creek was an incredible experience,” said the city’s Mayor Darcy Dober. “It showed that smaller communities can host major events and create lasting impacts for athletes and fans.”

After the Para Cup’s conclusion, the city applied to host another Hockey Canada event, though further details on that application’s status are not yet available.
