Fort St. John to host FIFA World Cup 2026 community event

Fort St. John residents will have a chance to take in FIFA World Cup festivities this week as the Canada Celebrates tour makes a stop in the city.

The free event runs Thursday and Friday at Centennial Park, with activities starting at 11 a.m. each day.

Local resident Zayn Omar says it’s been exciting to see the community come together, with soccer-themed games, live entertainment and fans gathering to cheer on Canada.

“After school today, my friends and I came down to Centennial Park to watch South Africa face Mexico. Even though one of my friends isn’t the biggest soccer fan, he was the first one to jump out of his seat when Mexico scored. So whether you’re a huge soccer fan or just looking for a fun day out, there’ll be something for everyone.”

The tour is travelling across the country to bring communities together as Canada prepares to host FIFA World Cup matches for the first time.

Canada’s men’s national team is set to open tournament play Friday against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.

After its stop in Fort St. John, the Canada Celebrates tour will head to Tumbler Ridge on Monday.
