The District of Tumbler Ridge is inviting residents who may be thinking about running in the next municipal election to take part in an upcoming information session on the process.
In a social media post, the district said it will hold a preliminary candidate information session for anyone interested in running for mayor or council in the 2026 general local election.
The session is expected to run July 14 to 16, with a final date and time to be confirmed depending on interest. It will take place ahead of the pre-campaign period, which begins July 20.
The one-hour session will walk potential candidates through the roles of mayor and councillor, how local government works, expected time commitments, remuneration and the nomination and election process.
It will also cover key election dates, available resources for candidates and include a question-and-answer period.
If interest is strong, the district says additional sessions could be offered in August ahead of the nomination period, which opens September. 1 at 9 a.m. and closes September. 11 at 4 p.m.
To qualify, candidates must be at least 18 years old on election day, be Canadian citizens and have lived in B.C. for at least six months before filing nomination papers. They must also meet eligibility requirements under the Local Government Act.
Anyone interested in attending is asked to register through an online form. Residents can also sign up or get more information by calling Tumbler Ridge town hall at 250-242-4242 or by emailing corporate@dtr.ca.
