The B.C. Wildfire Service rescinded its ban on category one campfires in Fort Nelson after cool and rainy summer days in the area.
As of noon today, July 7, the wildfire service is removing its ban on smaller fires in the Fort Nelson Forest District, which borders the Cassian, Mackenzie and Fort St John fire zones.
Category one campfires are defined by the wildfire service as any fire that is smaller than half a metre wide by half a metre tall.
The decision comes after fire danger ratings in the area lowered. Although, the wildfire service cautioned residents to be mindful about when and where they choose to spark their campfire.
“Avoid having a campfire when it’s windy, choose a proper fire pit or make a ring of rocks at least three meters from trees, shrubs, structures and debris,” the service wrote.
One person should stay with a fire , while extinguishing items such as water or a firefighting hand tool, such as a fire axe, must be readily available.
Before leaving the area, the fire must be fully extinguished – to test if it is safe to leave, the service suggests feeling the ashes, they should be cool to the touch.
Category two and three fires, including fireworks, firecrackers and burn barrels, remain banned.
