B.C. Hydro’s Site C project in Fort St John reached another milestone today, as the fifth generating unit to be operational and ready-to-go.
The generator is the second-to-last to come online, with the final one on track to be commissioned this fall. The first four units came on progressively, with the first generator being okayed in October 2024 and the fourth in March of this year.
“Commissioning the fifth generating unit at Site C is a significant step towards securing more clean and affordable electricity for communities, homes and businesses,” said Adrian Dix, the Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions.
In a hydroelectric dam, a generating unit uses the kinetic energy from running water to create energy, which when expelled, becomes power.
According to B.C. Hydro, each individual unit in Site C is capable of generating enough energy to power 80,000 homes – when the dam becomes fully operational this fall, it will be able to power 500,000 homes.
