Dawson Creek city council to consider zoning amendment for a new care facility

Dawson Creek city council will consider a zoning bylaw that will permit a new community care facility downtown.

The City of Dawson Creek issued a notice for its residents advising them of a zoning amendment the city council will consider during their August 11 council meeting.

The proposed changes will rezone a property located at 14 Street and 101 Avenue from a service commercial allowance, which permits car dealerships, cannabis dispensaries, and restaurants, to a general commercial zone.

According to the city, this specific allowance would permit a community care facility.

Not to be confused with a community centre, a community care facility is a home for people who are considered vulnerable under the province’s Community Care and Assisted Living Act – these individuals may need extra assistance because of a disability, illness, or their age.

Northern Health currently operates one long-term care home and one assisted living facility in Dawson Creek, both are publicly funded.

Residents who are interested in viewing the proposed amendment bylaw can visit the planning department at City Hall during their regular office hours.
