A two-vehicle collision on the northbound Alaska Highway in Fort St John claimed the life of one driver.
The RCMP said they received a report regarding the two-vehicle collision at 1:42 on the afternoon of August 11. The accident was in the north end of the city, on Highway 97 North at 269 Road, which is just over 4 kilometres outside of Fort St John’s downtown.
A SUV was heading southbound on Highway 97 and ran the red light at 269 Road, meanwhile, a tanker truck was turning left onto the Alaska Highway. Police said the two vehicles collided, and the driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
According to police, the family of the SUV driver has been informed of the incident. Officers did not say if the driver of the tanker truck was injured.
In 2024, the RCMP reported seven fatal motor vehicle incidents in Fort St John’s boundaries, per the service’s report to city council.
The Mounties said they, the B.C. Ambulance Service, and two fire services, Charlie Lake’s and Fort St John’s, responded to the call. The RCMP Collision Reconstruction Services examined the highway after the accident – hence yesterday’s temporary closure.
