Residents across northeastern B.C. are being urged to take precautions as wildfire smoke moves through the region, affecting air quality and visibility.
An air quality warning remains in effect for the Fort Nelson area and the Peace River region, with smoky conditions expected to continue over the next 24 to 48 hours.
The warning covers a large portion of eastern B.C., stretching from the Northwest Territories border near Fort Nelson to the province’s southern boundary.
According to the provincial advisory, smoke is moving south through the Peace region, affecting communities including Fort St. John, Dawson Creek and surrounding areas.
Officials said conditions may change quickly depending on wind patterns, with smoke levels and visibility expected to vary throughout the day and from one community to another.
The province is reminding residents that wildfire smoke can shift rapidly over short distances, making it important to monitor local conditions and stay up to date on wildfire activity and emergency alerts.
Health officials are advising people to reduce their exposure to smoke by limiting strenuous outdoor activity and spending more time indoors where air quality is better.
People who may be more sensitive to wildfire smoke include seniors, infants and young children, pregnant people, and those with heart or lung conditions or other chronic health concerns.
Residents are encouraged to continue checking air quality forecasts and wildfire updates as conditions across northeastern B.C. change.
Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
