PRRD backs funding bid for independent Peace Region agrologist

The Peace River Regional District is supporting an application that would bring an independent, year-round agrologist to the B.C. Peace Region.

At Thursday’s board meeting, the PRRD approved a letter of support for the BC Grain Producers Association’s application to the Northern Development Initiative Trust through the BC Hydro Peace Agricultural Compensation Fund.

PRRD chair Brad Sperling said the funding would help the association hire an independent agrologist to provide support to producers across the region.

The letter states that the regional board sees value in having an independent agricultural professional who can apply scientific expertise to agriculture, food systems and environmental stewardship.

The position would focus on areas including crop and soil management, livestock production and environmental protection.

Sperling said the initiative could help producers while also supporting the long-term health of the region’s agricultural resources.

“This support would help producers grow food safely while maintaining healthy land and water resources,” Sperling said.

“We wish the BC Grain Producers Association success with this initiative.”

If successful, the funding would support the establishment of a year-round agrologist position serving producers throughout the B.C. Peace Region.
