Work is underway on a permanent access road to Old Fort as the community continues its recovery from a landslide that temporarily cut off residents.
ACL Construction announced Thursday that it has been awarded the contract to build the new road south of Fort St. John, with construction getting underway the same day.
The earthworks portion of the project is valued at approximately $1.1 million.
The new road is expected to provide a more reliable, long-term route into the community following emergency access work completed earlier this year.
ACL Construction previously worked with the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit and Dawson Road Maintenance to establish temporary access after the landslide.
The company said its experience with complex civil infrastructure and previous landslide recovery work in the region helped position it for the permanent project.
“We’re pleased to build on our emergency response work and deliver a permanent solution for the Old Fort community,” commented John McPherson, CEO of ACL.
“This project reflects our commitment to critical regional infrastructure.”
The construction will involve large-scale earthworks and road building in challenging environmental conditions.
The project marks another step in restoring stable access for Old Fort residents following the landslide and the temporary measures put in place earlier this year.
