Peace Region voters get another chance to weigh in ahead of election day

Peace Region voters still have time to make their voices heard, with advance voting continuing Wednesday ahead of Saturday’s municipal election.

Whether you’re ready to choose your next local leaders or still deciding where you stand on some big-ticket issues, today is another opportunity to get your ballot in before General Voting Day on Oct. 17.

In Fort St. John, advance voting is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion.

Dawson Creek voters can cast their ballots at the Ovintiv Events Centre, while Peace River Regional District voters can head to one of three locations:

the PRRD office in Fort St. John, the PRRD office in Dawson Creek or the Chetwynd District Office. Voting at the regional district locations also runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

But this election is about more than deciding who will sit around the council table.

In Fort St. John, voters will also be asked whether the city should borrow up to $90 million to build a new aquatic facility and indoor fieldhouse.

The referendum requires a simple majority of valid votes cast to pass. If voters give the proposal the green light, the newly elected council would then consider adopting the borrowing bylaw, with construction potentially beginning in spring 2027.

There are also referendum questions on the ballot for some regional district residents.

Voters in Areas C, D and E will weigh in on six questions related to proposed new water service areas. Meanwhile, residents in parts of Areas B and E will be asked whether they support a proposed community and recreational space.

Municipal elections in B.C. take place every four years, giving residents a say in who represents them at city hall, on regional district boards and on school boards.

For anyone who hasn’t voted yet, advance voting offers a chance to beat the Saturday rush. General Voting Day across the region is Oct. 17.
