Students at Crescent Park Elementary will have more room to learn this fall, with a 115-seat addition opening as part of a provincewide push to expand and upgrade schools.
The new addition is one of 23 school capital projects opening across B.C. in September, including new classrooms, school expansions and seismic replacements.
The province said the projects will provide space for about 4,700 students and are backed by more than $560 million in provincial funding.
Premier David Eby said the investments are intended to keep pace with growing communities and improve learning environments for students.
“Our kids deserve the best start possible,” Eby said.
“Our plan is making a difference, but we can’t stop now.”
The Crescent Park expansion is part of more than $7 billion in school capital funding approved by the province since 2017.
That funding has delivered nearly 50,000 new student seats and almost 40,000 seismically safer seats across B.C.
Education and Child Care Minister Lisa Beare said new and improved schools are important not only for students but also for the communities around them.
“Schools are at the heart of our communities, where students learn, families connect and lifelong memories are made,” Beare said.
The province said 51 school capital projects are currently underway across B.C., including 13 new schools, 27 additions, 10 seismic upgrades or replacements and one renovation.
For Dawson Creek families, the Crescent Park addition means 115 additional students will have space at the school as the new school year gets underway.
