Swimmers in Fort St. John will have to find another place to make a splash this fall as the North Peace Leisure Pool closes for annual maintenance.
The pool will close Sept. 6 and is expected to reopen at 6 a.m. Oct. 5.
The City of Fort St. John said the annual shutdown allows staff to complete preventative maintenance, deep cleaning and larger projects that cannot be carried out while the pool is operating.
The city said regular maintenance helps extend the life of the facility and reduce the risk of unexpected closures.
The pool has already faced an unplanned closure this summer.
A problem with a circulation pump forced the leisure pool and waterslides to close July 3 after staff detected unusual pressure readings and performance issues. An inspection found significant internal corrosion in the pump.
The affected areas reopened July 16 after repairs were completed earlier than expected.
The scheduled shutdown comes as the city continues planning for a replacement for the aging North Peace Leisure Pool.
Fort St. John, the Peace River Regional District and the District of Taylor worked together from 2018 to 2025 to explore replacement options. The regional steering committee was dissolved in July 2025, with Fort St. John taking over responsibility for advancing the project.
Fort St. John residents will vote on borrowing up to $90 million for a proposed new aquatic facility and indoor fieldhouse during the 2026 general local election.
Residents can check the city’s recreation schedule for current programming and other recreation options during the shutdown.
