Fort St. John Friendship Society invites community to gather for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Community members in Fort St. John are being invited to gather, reflect, and walk together at the local Friendship Centre later this month to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Under the banner of “Honouring the Past, Respecting the Present, Building the Future,” the Fort St. John Friendship Society is hosting an open community event on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The gathering will take place at 10208 95 Ave., kicking off at 11 a.m.

Organizers said the day is designed to offer a space for connection, listening, and learning as the region honours survivors of residential schools and remembers the children who never came home.

The programming features hands-on activities alongside cultural performances. Attendees can participate in decorating orange shirts, with organizers noting that each shirt serves as a canvas to share a story and wear with pride.

A community walk will bring participants together in solidarity and remembrance, followed by a shared BBQ aimed at fostering local connection. Traditional dancers will also take part in the event to honour Indigenous culture through song and dance, alongside guest speakers sharing insights on how the community can move forward together.

The Friendship Society emphasizes that the event is open to everyone across the Peace Region as a space to remember, honour, and act.
