Dawson Creek residents urged to stay alert after bear family spotted

Dawson Creek residents are being reminded to stay cautious around wildlife after a black bear and two cubs were spotted in the city.

The sighting was reported Wednesday along the Dawson Trail near 17th Street, according to the City of Dawson Creek.

Residents in the area are being encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings and take precautions when travelling outdoors.

The city recommends travelling in groups, keeping dogs on a leash and giving bears plenty of room. Residents are also reminded never to approach bear cubs.

Anyone who encounters a bear should remain calm, slowly back away and give the animal a clear route to leave the area.

The city said residents should never run from a bear.

More information about staying safe around bears and what to do during an encounter is available through the B.C. government’s wildlife safety resources.

The Dawson Creek sighting follows several bear reports in the region this year, including sightings in Fort St. John in June.
