Two injured in Highway 97 crash near Fort St. John

Two people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a crash on Highway 97 shut down the route earlier this week.

The Alaska Highway was closed in both directions for approximately five hours on Tuesday, Jan. 6, according to the Fort St. John RCMP. Police said they responded to the call alongside the city’s fire rescue team.

“The five occupants in a two vehicle collision escape(d) serious injury in (the) collision on Highway 97,” said Cpl Shawn Ingham of the northeastern Mounties.

Drivers in Fort St John received several reminders from the police to drive safely and according to the weather conditions within the past month after receiving over 100 centimetres of snow in December.

In 2024, 24 accidents were reported at the intersection of 93 Avenue and 96 Street – with 14 of which occurring from January to March, and in December. It was the most common spot for collisions downtown regardless of the season, according to ICBC data.

Officers’ investigation into the collision is ongoing, and drivers are once again being reminded to go safely and slowly this winter. Live updates on road conditions along the Alaska Highway are available online at DriveBC.
