One dead after crash on Alaska Highway near Wonowon

One person is dead following a serious collision on the Alaska Highway near Wonowon that shut down a kilometre-long stretch of the road for several hours on Monday.

The crash happened around noon on Jan. 26, when a green Ford F-350 collided head-on with a black Dodge Caravan. The force of the impact pushed both vehicles into the side of a passing logging truck, according to B.C. Highway Patrol.

“The collision was severe. The driver of the black Dodge Caravan, a 27-year-old man from Grande Prairie, Alta., did not survive,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, of the provincial highway service.

Mounties in Fort St John confirmed that they were on the scene, alongside the patrol officers.

A 25-year-old man from Swift Current, Sask., who was allegedly driving the pickup truck, was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

“He has been taken to hospital for serious injuries. The driver of the logging truck was unhurt,” the highway service said. “B.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the collision as potentially criminal.”

Highway 97 is reopened in the area, according to Drive B.C.

Anyone with dashcam footage or who witnessed the incident is being asked to get in touch with the Fort St John branch of the highway patrol at 250-787-8140.
