After a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School left 10 people dead, including the gunman, communities in the Peace region are offering condolences.
“Our hearts are with the people of Tumbler Ridge during this unimaginable loss. In the Peace region, we are deeply connected; we celebrate together in good times and we stand together in moments of profound sadness. Today, we stand with Tumbler Ridge, offering our condolences, our support, and our compassion,” said Mayor Darcy Dober of Dawson Creek.
Fort St. John Mayor Lilia Hansen shared similar sentiments the evening after the incident.
“We are holding the people of Tumbler Ridge close in our thoughts tonight. Please know that your neigbours across the Peace region are grieving alongside you and are ready to support you in any way we can in the days ahead,” wrote Hansen in a statement on behalf of her and her city councillors.
During a press conference on the night of the shooting, Supt. Ken Floyd, North District RCMP commander, said the provincial police will manage the ongoing investigation. He committed, on behalf of the Mounties, to providing more information and updates on the tragedy at the local high school soon.
The District of Tumbler Ridge posted a statement last night after the active-shooter warning was rescinded just before 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
“Today, our community experienced a deeply disturbing incident. Our hearts are with all those affected, and we recognize that many residents may be feeling shocked, scared, and overwhelmed,” the district wrote.
“We are grateful for the swift response of local emergency services and first responders … In the days ahead, we know this will be difficult for many to process. Please check in on one another, lean on available supports, and know that Tumbler Ridge is a strong and caring community. We will get through this together.”
