Winds exceeding 100 km/h are expected in southern sections of the Peace region, while the entire area is under a moderate wind warning for Saturday.
“A series of strong low pressure systems will impact the region from early Saturday morning through early Sunday morning,” said Environment Canada – who issued a yellow, or moderate, level warning. These alerts are put in place “when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.”
The warning is in effect for the whole northeastern B.C., from the southernmost tip of the Peace to the Northern Rockies.
An initial system is expected to arrive on Saturday morning, and to bring with it gusts of 70-90 km/h. Then they will “ease slightly” by around 20 km/h in the afternoon.
“A second system Saturday evening will strengthen the winds again, with gusts of 80-100 km/h. Communities south of Dawson Creek may experience gusts exceeding 100 km/h,” according to the weather tracker.
Loose objects should be secured, and drivers should pack their patience. High-sided vehicles may be pushed around if the wind is fast enough. Residents are being told to “prepare for possible disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities.” Environment Canada says it cannot rule out local utility outages.
By Sunday morning, the winds should have blown past the northeast.
