Warming centre available until Sunday in Dawson Creek

A warming centre opened today in Dawson Creek and will remain open through the weekend as the city readies for a stretch of cold winter weather.

The centre is reopening in response to expected wintry conditions and will be open all day every day until Sunday, March 15. It will operate at the Nawican Shelter on 102 Avenue in the city.

Environment Canada said Dawson Creek is expected to see highs of 0 C and temperatures as low as –21 C in the coming days, along with snow or a chance of flurries on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday night.

“This space is here to support those in need during the colder months,” the city of Dawson Creek said in their activation announcement. The city thanked the Nawican Friendship Centre for opening their shelter doors, and the B.C. Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness for helping to fund it.

The lowest temperature recorded in the south Peace city this week was on Mar. 14, 2020, when Environment Canada says it hit –33 C.
