Old Fort under evacuation alert as landslide risk grows

Residents in the Old Fort area are being asked to get ready to leave their homes on short notice as ground movement continues to worsen.

The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) issued a new evacuation alert Thursday morning for parts of the landslide zone, citing increasing risk to life and safety.

The alert affects several properties along 240 and 265 roads, as well as homes west of an existing evacuation order on Old Fort Road, including properties at 7711 and 7587 Old Fort Road.

An evacuation order remains in place for homes east of — but not including — 7711 Old Fort Road, meaning those residents should already be out.

“Prepare to leave quickly”

The PRRD said the alert is meant to give residents time to prepare in case conditions deteriorate further.

“An Evacuation Alert has been issued to prepare you to evacuate your premises, or property should it be found necessary,” the notice states. “Residents will be given as much notice as possible prior to evacuation; however, you may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.”

People in the alert zone are encouraged to pack essentials now — including ID, medications, chargers and important personal items — so they can leave quickly if needed.

The ongoing landslide has created months of uncertainty for Old Fort residents, many of whom have already faced repeated alerts and evacuations.

While PRRD orders apply to most of the area, officials noted that First Nations communities on reserve land and municipalities manage their own emergency responses.

Staying informed

Residents can check whether their property is affected using the PRRD’s online map tool and are encouraged to monitor updates regularly.

Officials say information about evacuation orders, reception centres and supports will be posted on the PRRD website and shared through alert systems.

More information is available through EmergencyInfoBC online. Updates are also being posted on the Peace River Regional District website and its Facebook page.
