Old Fort landslide update: Road still unstable, no timeline for repairs

Residents of the Old Fort community remain cut off with no clear timeline for when access will be restored, as the landslide affecting Old Fort Road continues to shift.

Evacuation alert No. 1 and evacuation order No. 1 remain in place, the Peace River Regional District said, after the Ministry of Transportation and Transit closed the road.

Officials report the road has now shifted 104 metres. The slide is still active, with material continuing to build upslope, a situation that could lead to further movement and instability in the days ahead.

For residents, that means ongoing uncertainty.

No repair work is expected to begin this weekend due to unsafe conditions. Officials say updates will only be shared if there are significant changes.

The regional district said it is continuing to monitor the situation closely with the province, using tools such as drone imagery to assess the slide. In the meantime, residents are being urged to stay away from the area to avoid putting themselves, and emergency crews, at risk.

With the main access route closed, residents face disruptions to travel, services and daily routines. There is still no estimate on when reconstruction might begin, leaving many in the community waiting for answers.

The next update from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit is expected Monday.

Where to find information

Residents are encouraged to check official sources for updates:

People can also sign up for Northeast B.C. emergency alerts to receive notifications about this and other emergencies, including wildfires and floods: https://ow.ly/kv4c50YTS5g

Officials stress that this local alert system is separate from provincial emergency broadcasts.
