Old Fort residents allowed home after evacuation order lifted

Residents of Old Fort can return home after the Peace River Regional District rescinded Evacuation Order No. 1 at noon on May 21, ending another period of uncertainty for the small community affected by the ongoing landslide.

The order had restricted access to the area because of concerns about road stability linked to the landslide.

While residents and service providers are now permitted to return, the regional district said Evacuation Alert No. 2 remains in effect because the current access road is considered temporary.

The alert means residents should remain prepared to leave again if conditions worsen or road access becomes unsafe.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit is expected to establish a permanent access route across the landslide area in the coming months.

The landslide has disrupted travel and daily routines for Old Fort residents, many of whom rely on the route for work, school, medical appointments and essential services.

The Peace River Regional District advised residents to monitor road conditions and follow any future emergency instructions.
