Taylor Bridge maintenance project delayed to late July after weather slows welding work

Motorists using the Taylor Bridge will face construction delays for longer than expected after the maintenance project was extended.

Dawson Road Maintenance says the bridge rehabilitation work has now been pushed to Thursday, July 18, following weather-related setbacks that slowed critical welding operations.

The Taylor Bridge Welding Project began in May and was originally set to wrap up by June 30. The contractor says recent harsh weather, combined with the amount of welding required, led to the revised timeline.

Officials say the extra time will help ensure the work is completed safely and to required quality standards.

Work continues overnight on weekdays from 7 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., with lane closures and pilot vehicles in place during those hours. Oversized loads are not permitted to cross the bridge during construction periods.

The Taylor Bridge serves as a major transportation corridor in northeast B.C., carrying thousands of vehicles daily, including significant commercial traffic.

“We appreciate your understanding and will continue to monitor progress closely,” Dawson Road Maintenance said in a statement.

“Should conditions improve, we will make every effort to complete the work ahead of the revised schedule.”

The extended timeline means overnight travel restrictions will remain in effect for several more weeks.
