The race for Dawson Creek’s next mayor is starting to take shape, with a familiar name now stepping forward.
City councillor Kyle MacDonald has officially announced he will run for mayor in this fall’s municipal election.
In a social media post, MacDonald reflected on his time serving on council, calling the past four years a privilege and pointing to the relationships he has built along the way. He said those experiences have helped him better understand both the challenges and opportunities facing the community.
“I’ve worked hard to listen, learn and build strong relationships,” he wrote, saying those experiences have given him a strong understanding of both the opportunities and challenges facing Dawson Creek.
MacDonald is currently serving his first term on city council, after being elected in 2022.
Outside of politics, he and his wife Gillian own and operate Tim Hortons locations in Dawson Creek and have long been involved in supporting local charities, youth programs and community organizations. He also sits on the boards of several groups in the South Peace.

His announcement comes just days after Mayor Darcy Dober confirmed he will not seek re-election in October. Dober said the decision follows his desire to spend more time with his family after a term that included major issues such as drought concerns and long-term water supply planning.
MacDonald said he is proud of what the current council has accomplished but believes there is still more to do.
“I look forward to earning your trust, hearing your ideas, and working together to build an even stronger Dawson Creek for future generations,” he wrote.
B.C.’s municipal elections are scheduled for Oct. 17.
