Fort St. John launches summer walking challenge

The City of Fort St. John is once again encouraging residents to lace up their shoes and hit the trails as part of its annual Outdoor Summer Walking Challenge.

The program, which runs until Aug. 31, invites residents to track their walking activity throughout the summer while getting outside and enjoying local trails.

City communications manager Ryan Harvey says the challenge has been offered for several years as a way to promote active living and community engagement during the warmer months.

“It is just an opportunity to encourage people to get out, enjoy the trails and their community with nice weather and an opportunity to win some prizes.”

Participants can compete in categories including total time spent walking and total distance covered. At the end of the challenge, participants are asked to submit their tracking sheets to the Fort St. John Visitor Centre by Sept. 4. Winners will be announced shortly afterward.

“Residents can just fill out the tracking sheet and return it to the visitor centre,” Harvey said.

“Once they spend all summer tracking their walking, they need to submit it by September 4 and the winners will be announced shortly after.”

Tracking sheets are available at the Fort St. John Visitor Centre inside the Pomeroy Sports Centre on 96 Street, or can be downloaded from the city’s website.
