A mechanical issue has forced the temporary closure of the leisure pool and water slides at the North Peace Leisure Pool, with repairs expected to take about two weeks.
The City of Fort St. John said staff discovered a problem with one of the facility’s circulation pumps during routine monitoring.
According to the city, operators noticed unusual pressure readings and reduced pump performance before an inspection revealed significant internal corrosion.
The pump was removed immediately as a precaution to prevent further damage to the pool’s mechanical systems.
City officials said catching the issue early helped avoid a more extensive equipment failure that could have affected the filtration, heating and water treatment systems.
“Our maintenance staff identified the problem before it became much more serious,” said Kylah Bryde, the city’s director of community services.
“Their quick response helped protect the facility while maintaining a safe environment for staff and visitors.”
The leisure pool and water slides are expected to remain closed for approximately two weeks while repairs are completed.
During that time, city staff will also inspect related equipment and review maintenance schedules to help reduce the risk of similar problems in the future.
The city says the closure also underscores the growing challenges of maintaining the aging infrastructure at the North Peace Leisure Pool, where many core mechanical systems are nearing the end of their service life and require more frequent repairs.
Officials noted work is continuing on the city’s proposed aquatics facility project, which is intended to replace aging infrastructure and meet increasing demand for aquatic and recreation services.
The remainder of the facility, including the main pool, remains open. Residents are encouraged to check the city’s online drop-in schedule before visiting, as programming may be affected while repairs are underway.
