Patients at Fort St. John Hospital could benefit from faster test results and fewer emergency transfers thanks to a new piece of diagnostic equipment.
The hospital now has an osmometer, following a donation from LP Building Solutions.
The equipment helps measure the concentration of dissolved particles in bodily fluids, providing physicians with important information when treating critically ill patients.
Previously, samples requiring this type of testing had to be sent to Dawson Creek, with results taking two to three days to come back.
Having the equipment available in Fort St. John means care teams can access results sooner, helping physicians make quicker decisions when time is critical.
The new capability is also expected to reduce the need for emergency transfers, allow more patients to receive treatment closer to home and provide additional support for the hospital’s intensive care unit team when managing serious and complex conditions.
The hospital said the donation will support patient care in the community for years to come, thanking LP Building Solutions for helping bring the equipment to Fort St. John.
