Curtis Whitford will represent Peace River North in the B.C. legislature as the Conservatives prepare to form a majority government following Saturday’s provincial election.
Whitford’s victory marks a change in representation for the riding, with former MLA Jordan Kealy falling short in his bid to return as an independent candidate.
Kealy reflected on his two years in office in a statement following the election, saying it had been a privilege to serve the riding.
“Even though I am not reelected I am thrilled the NDP are no longer in power,” Kealy wrote.
He also wished Whitford luck in his new role and pointed to regional priorities, including the Taylor Bridge.
“Peace River North should be expecting results now that the BC Conservatives are in power. Bring on the Taylor Bridge,” Kealy wrote.
Whitford, meanwhile, says his approach to representing the riding will centre on being accessible to residents and listening to their concerns.
“My commitment is very pretty simple: I’ll show up, I’ll listen, I’ll learn, and then I’m going to share,” Whitford said.
“I’ll be available, I’ll work hard every day, and make sure the people of Peace River North have a strong voice in Victoria.”
With the Conservatives set to take power provincially, attention will turn to how the new government addresses issues affecting the Peace Region, including infrastructure, health care and local economic needs.
Whitford will now take on the responsibility of representing Peace River North in Victoria as residents look for progress on issues important to the region.
