Dawson Creek’s new mayor and council have officially taken office, with Dwaine Dilworth promising to listen to residents and work together to move the community forward.
Dilworth was sworn in during Monday’s inaugural meeting, beginning a new four-year term alongside six councillors: Gregg Apolonio, Rob Atkinson, Amy Kaempf, Judy Kucharuk, Steven Reynolds and Mike Sudnik.
The new mayor takes over from Darcy Dober, who served in the role before the latest election.
In his inaugural remarks, Dilworth said he wants to hear ideas from people throughout Dawson Creek, even when the answers to local challenges aren’t straightforward.
“There won’t always be easy answers, but great ideas can come from anyone and I look forward to hearing from people across our community,” he said.
At its first meeting, council also made several appointments to regional boards and committees.
Dilworth was named Dawson Creek’s representative on the Peace River Regional District board, with Atkinson serving as the alternate director.
Kaempf was appointed as the alternate representative on the Dawson Creek-Pouce Coupe Fire Management Committee.
Council also approved its acting mayor schedule for 2027, with councillors each taking a two-month turn in the role.
In closing remarks, Dilworth thanked residents for voting and placing their confidence in the new council. He also acknowledged the work of the outgoing mayor and council, along with city staff who support municipal services and elected officials.
Looking ahead, Dilworth said the coming term will bring challenges, but believes working as a team will help council address them.
“My goal is simple: to work hard as a team, to be accountable and to help make Dawson Creek a safe, strong and thriving community that we’re all proud to call home,” he said.
